Four members of our team participated as speakers at the 4th International Congress on Underground and Open Pit Mining, sharing research and technical insights on mine simulation, geomechanics, and caving operations.
From October 21 to 23, UMining 2026 took place at the University of Chile, bringing together mining professionals, researchers, and industry representatives to exchange knowledge and address key challenges facing the mining sector.
This year, four members of the BCTEC team contributed to the congress through presentations covering different areas of mining engineering.
Christian Hardtmann presented “The Role of Simulation in Production Capacity Estimation: MB N4 Case Study – Chuquicamata Underground Mine,” a study developed in collaboration with Codelco and the University of Chile. His presentation explored the use of simulation tools to support production capacity assessment in underground mining. We also extend our appreciation to Codelco for authorizing the presentation of this case study.
Daniel Saavedra presented “Numerical Modeling of Fine Particle Migration in Caving Mining Using the Discrete Element Method (DEM),” research associated with the University of Chile, the University of Concepción, and BCTEC. The study focused on investigating fine particle behavior through numerical modeling.
Pablo Muñoz presented “Impact of Mixing Methods on Extractable Reserves in Panel Caving Operations,” a study associated with the University of Concepción that examined how different mixing approaches influence the estimation of recoverable mineral reserves.
Aladino Carrillo shared his research titled “Rockbursts in Caving Mining During Undercutting Stages,” developed as part of his undergraduate thesis. His work addressed geomechanical risks associated with undercutting and their implications for safety as mining operations extend to greater depths.
The participation of our professionals at UMining 2026 reflects the diversity of technical expertise within BCTEC and our strong connection to research and knowledge exchange.
At BCTEC, we value opportunities that encourage technical collaboration, strengthen ties between academia and industry, and contribute to developing solutions for the evolving challenges of mining.
